As a consequence of the regions abundant coal reserves, the determination and acumen of the local business community and the development of steam traction in the heartlands of north-east England the world’s first truly commercial railway would emerge from the coalfields of south west Durham.

The coming of the railways was to transform lives and landscapes forever!
